Themes January 2004 - Colors, Numbers, Shapes & Letters

Crafts

1.  Shape Printing- Using block shapes to print with (square, circle, triangle and rectangle)

2. Painting- Various colors of paint and tools to paint with (feather- Blue, paint brush- Red and

cotton ball- Yellow)

3.  Number Painting- Using cookie cutter numbers 1, 2, 3 and dipping them in paint.

4.  Name Plaques- Using colored playdough and cookie cutter letters to make a name plaque.  Each child painted a piece of wood.  They spelled out their names with the cookie cutter letters and playdough. We baked their names and then glued them onto the wood for a name plaque.

 

Activities

1. Colors-   Naming and categorizing colors with teddy bears

2.  Hidden Mouse Game- Mouse hides behind shape and children take turns guessing what shape the mouse is hiding behind

3. Lets Spell Our Names- Using magnetic letter magnets help the children to spell their names and recognize the letters in their name

4. Numbers- Use different items for the children to count- 1 animal, 2 teddy bears, 3 dinosaurs.  We also used magnetic numbers to count from 1-10.

 

Songs/fingerplays

1.  Numbers- 5 monkeys swinging from a tree

5 little monkeys swinging from a tree, along came a crocodile as quiet as can be, Ah said the monkey, you can’t catch me, SNAP! Crocodile catches one of the monkeys. Continue with 4, 3, 2 monkeys.  The last monkey at the end says HAHA missed me.

Sing to the tune of "I'm a Little Teapot."

I am momma circle round like a pie. (Make a circle over your head with arms.)

I'm baby triangle three sides have I. (Make a triangle with 3 fingers.)

I am papa square my sides are four. (Make a square in the air.)

I'm cousin rectangle shaped like a door. (Draw a rectangular door in the air.)

I am brother oval shaped like a zero. (Make oval with arms over head.)

I'm sister diamond with a sparkle and a glow.  (Put thumbs and index fingers together.)

We are the shapes that you all know.

Look for us wherever you go (Make circles with index fingers and thumb and place around eyes like glasses.)

Books

1.  Shapes- A dog finds things that represent shapes (Circle-balloon, Triangle- party hat, Square-present, Rectangle, cake.  It’s a birthday party.

2.  Numbers- A book counting from one to ten with pictures representing each number.

(1drum, 2 flags, 3 pails)

3. Pop-Up Colors- Teddy small is collecting yellow objects and Edward tall is collecting red objects. Edward tall has found lots of blue objects by the seaside.  Teddy small has found lots of green objects in the garden.

4.  Letters- The Alphabet and learning how to write letters and words.
