Crafts

1. Paper Plate Meals

Have the children look through magazines to find pictures of different kinds of foods. Then have them cut out the pictures and glue them onto paper plates to make 'breakfasts', 'lunches' or 'dinners'

2. Pizza Pie Art- Make pizza's on paper plates. Provide green pepper(green paper); hamburger(brown paper); pepperoni(red paper); cheese(yellow yarn). Use onion flakes and Italian seasoning. Paint the plate red for the tomato sauce. You can also sprinkle yellow glitter for the Parmesan Cheese before the glue dries.

3. Pasta with Pizzazz- Dip several cotton balls in brown paint and place them on waxed paper to dry. Then pile cooked spaghetti noodles on a paper plate and let dry. Using red paint, color the noodles to look as though they are topped with spaghetti sauce. After the paint dries, glue the balls on the noodles.

4. Cutie Carrot

Print out the template from DLTK kids.  Trace the pattern on to construction paper an have your children glue the pieces together to make a Cutie Carrot.

5. Mr. Cheese

Print out the template from DLTK kids.  Trace the pattern on to construction paper an have your children glue the pieces together to make Mr. Cheese.

6. Chunky Chicken

Cut out a chicken pattern out of construction paper and have children glue on eyes, nose, lips and a top hat to make Chunky Chicken.

8. Betsy Bread

Cut out a bread pattern out of construction paper and have children glue on eyes, nose and lips.

9. Awesome Apple

Print out the template from DLTK kids.  Trace the pattern on to construction paper an have your children glue the pieces together to make an Awesome Apple.

10.  Four Food Groups Mobile

Color a food from each food group and hang them hanger.

 

 

Circle Activities

1. Stone Soup

Pretend that you are making stone soup with the children. Using imitation food, have the children choose one that they would want in their soup.  Combine them all in a bowl and have each child take a turn mixing it.  Your own stone soup made by the children. Sing this as you make the stone soup.

2. The Little Red Hen Felt Activity

The little red hen wants to make bread but the cat, pick and duck won’t help.  So the hen does it all by herself until the end when the cat, pig and duck want to eat the bread.  But the hen won’t let them because they didn’t help.

3. What is your Favorite Food?

Make a graph of what the child’s favorite food is and label what food group it comes from.

4. Food Pyramid

Make a food pyramid with the children.

5. Food Groups

Talk about what the food groups are and give some examples of each.

6. What Food am I?

Ask the children to identify the food that is shown to them.  Ask the children what food group it comes from?

7. The Very Hungry Caterpillar Felt Activity

The tiny little caterpillar is very hungry.  He eats lots of food until he has a tummy ache.  He eats one last leaf.  He not so tiny anymore, he’s big fat caterpillar.  He made a cocoon, stayed in his home for awhile and then turned into a beautiful butterfly.

9. Who Stole the Cookies?

Sing this song as each child gets to have a turn having the cookie.

10. Taste Testing

Various food items

Blindfold

Cut up and clean various food items. Blindfold your child and have him/her taste and smell different foods. Have him/her describe the various tastes, smells and textures before they guess what it is.

1. Something Good

Dad takes the kids grocery shopping. The little girl wants to buy junk food such as chocolate, candies and ice cream.  Dad reminds her that junk food will rot your teeth.  Dad gets upset and tells his daughter not to move.  She stays still and gets put on the shelf as a doll.  People try to buy her but realize she’s real.  Dad finds his daughter and of to the check out counter they go.  The cashier tell dad he has to buy his daughter as she has a price tag of 29.95 on her.  Dad refuses to pay when his daughter says “Aren’t I worth it.”  Dad says yes, pays it and gives her a big hug.  They go home and unpack all their groceries.

2. T’choupi est Trop Gourmand

T’choupi wants to eat cake his mothers making, chocolate his dad’s eating, candies that he finds.  He eats a little of all that and then at dinner time he feels full and not so hungry.  He has a sore tummy because he ate too much junk food.

3. The Lunch Bunch

Three kids sit together at lunchtime and trade and share their lunches every day.

4. Who Stole the Cookies?

Oh no! Who took the cookies? Was it Cat? Or was it Mouse? Or maybe it was Turtle!  It was Bear who stole the cookies.  He ate them all and feels bad when his friends find out.  But they bake more and everybody shares the cookies.

5. Just Enough Carrots

Elephants, rabbits, and birds are the customers in this funny grocery store.  Cans of worms and bags of peanuts line the shelves. Can you guess what the little rabbit wants more of? Munchy, Crunchy carrots of course! Why is his mother buying so much worms and peanuts?  His friends the elephant and bird are coming over for lunch.

6. Lunch

A mouse is very hungry and eats a crisps white turnip, tasty orange carrots, sweet yellow corn, tender green peas, tart blueberries, sour purple grapes, shiny red apples, and juicy pink watermelon crunchy black seeds and all. Then he took a nap until dinner time.

7. More Spaghetti, I Say

I cannot play, can’t you see I’m eating spaghetti.  I eat spaghetti on pancakes and ice cream and with pickles and ham.   I love spaghetti.  You’re finished your spaghetti, now you can play.  I need more, more spaghetti.  I want you play please; I will get rid of your spaghetti all over the place.  You look bad, you look green, you look sick you look sad.  Yes I feel sick. I think I will rest with you. I will take the spaghetti away.  Mmmmmmmm Spaghetti is good.  I can play now.  I can’t play with you I need more spaghetti.  I love spaghetti.

 

8. Max’s Breakfast

Max doesn’t want to eat his eggs. He wants his strawberries.  Max hides his egg but his sister always finds it.  So he hides himself but she finds him.   His sister says eggs are yummy and shows him by tasting it.  The egg is all gone I can have strawberries now.

9. The Enormous Potato

There was once a farmer who planted a potato.  When the time came to pull it, it wouldn’t budge.  So the farmer called for help, first to his wife, then his daughter, the dog, cat and the mouse.  Holding onto one another, they all pulled until RRRRRRRRIP out popped the potato.   They washed, chopped and cooked it. The smell of the potato brought the town.  They all brought forks, bowls, butter and salt.  Everyone was eating the potato.  They ate and ate and ate until the potato was done.

10. Who Stole the Cookies from the Cookie Jar?

Help skunk solve the mystery of who stole the cookies from the cookie jar. Was it Mouse, Raven, Squirrel, Rabbit, Turtle, Raccoon, Snake, Beaver or Frog?  It was the ants that stole the cookies from the cookie jar.  Your right it’s true but there’s enough for all of you.  We left a trail to show you the way, so eat your cookies and then let’s play.

 

 

General Activities

1. Pasta Sort

Place different shapes, sizes, and colors of pasta in a bowl. Let your children sort it.

2. Spaghetti Differences

Provide your children with cooked and uncooked spaghetti. Let them see the differences in texture, feel, etc. Talk to them about what makes them different.

3. The Healthy Restaurant

In your dramatic play area set up a restaurant complete with menus, plastic food, and play money. They can pretend to be waiters and waitresses. Remind your children to order healthy food.

4. Play-Dough Bakery

Make a lot of white play dough so your children can roll it mash it and make their bread

Add muffin pans, cake pans, bowls, measuring cups, etc

Provide your children with rolling pins, aprons, and maybe even chef hats!

For an added effect add play food ingredients (salt, eggs, flour, etc.)

5. Pasta Kitchen

Provide several different sizes, shapes and colors of pasta

Provide pans, spoons, and bowls for your children to pretend their cooking in.

You can also use yarn colored like spaghetti and pom-poms for meatballs

6. Food Art

Baking sheet

Flour or salt

Sprinkle flour or salt over a baking sheet. Show your child you can draw in the flour with your finger. Draw letters, numbers, shapes.
