Crafts

 

1. Tire Track Art

Provide your children with paper and paint. Let them drive their trucks in the paint and on the papers. This will make really neat designs on the paper.

2. My Airplane

Cut a slit all the way through the paper towel roll. Cut out wings from cardboard and stick them in the slit. Finally, let your children decorate and design their own airplane.

3. School Bus

Cut the lid off an egg carton. Paint the lid yellow.    

While the paint is drying, cut 2 circles out of black construction paper. Also while the paint is drying cut small images of people from magazines and add them to the window's of the bus.

4. Car Shape Craft

Cut out one big semi circle what ever color u want your car.   Then cut out two smaller semi circles the same color as the car and glue one on each end for the hubcaps.  Cut out 2 larger circles for wheels and two smaller ones for the inside of the wheels and glue them on.

5. Sail Boat

Cut a triangle from a piece of construction paper - this will be your sail. Decorate the sail with crayons, markers, and/or stickers. Punch three holes along one side of the triangle. Weave a drinking straw (the boat's mast) through the holes. Put a small wad of molding clay on the inside of the lid. Push the end of the drinking straw into the clay. You now have a cute little toy sailboat that can float in water!

6. Train

Using a train pattern, cut out the engine, two cars and the caboose in different colored construction paper.  Attach each one with yarn and then add wheels and windows.

7. Transportation Mural

Create a transportation mural by cutting a piece of light colored bulletin board paper approx. 6-8 feet in length. Using a marker, draw the horizon, a road, a body of water, and tracks. Then give the children cut out boat, train, car, and airplane to glue on the appropriate spot.

 

Circle Activities

 

1. Transportation

Have pictures of various transportation vehicles and help the children to identify each one.

2. Transportation chart

Have a picture of a couple of different type’s boats, train, car, and airplane.  Make a graph with different areas. (water, road, tracks and sky.  Glue pictures in appropriate category.

3. All Aboard

Be 'Mrs. Conductor' “All Aboard!” The circle time express is about to leave the station! Alllll Aboooard! Get your ticket here!' As the children arrive give ticket (tickets from party store). Continue until all are sitting and then do song.

This is a choo choo train (bend elbows)

Puffing down the track (rotate arms in rhythm)

Now it's going forward (go forward, continue rotating motion)

Now it's going back (go back, continue rotating motion)

Now the bell is ringing (pull cord)

Now the whistle blows (hold fist near mouth and toot)

What a lot of noise it makes (cover ears) Everywhere it goes.(stretch out arms)

4. Carpet Boating

Put the carpet on the floor with the carpet side down (slides better.) Have them sit on the carpet piece with their feet extended out in front and their knees bent.

Explain how they can pull themselves forward with their feet. Have them work their arms as if they are rowing a boat. Sing 'Row, row, row your boat.'

5. Stop and Go

Pretend that you are different transportation vehicles such as train, boat, car, and airplane. Explain to the children what you are pretending to be and show them how.  Then explain that when you say go we for example fly around like a plane, when I say stop everyone stops.

6. Traveling

Display pictures of the following means of transportation:  car, train, plane, and boat. Ask the following questions and let the children decide which vehicle answers the questions.

1. Which one travels in the sky?

2. Which one travels on tracks?

3. Which one travels on the ocean?

4. Which one travels on the roads?

7. Taking a Trip Flannel Board Story

Pieces Needed: Bradley Bear, train, boat, airplane, bus, car, hot air balloon, roller skates

TAKING A TRIP

On Sunday Bradley Bear told his mother that he wanted to go to Disneyland.  “I want to ride on Space Mountain,” said Bradley.  How will you get there? asked his mother. I'm going to take the train,” he declared. “Have a good time,” called his mother.

On Monday, he told his father he was going to the beach.  I want to look for seashells and fly my kite, said Bradley. How will you get there?” asked his father.  I’ll sail on a boat” he explained.  Don't forget your bathing suit, laughed his father.

On Tuesday he told his mother that he thought he would visit his grandmother because she was always glad to see him. How, will you get there? asked his mother.  I’ll zoom in an airplane in the sky, he shouted.  Tell her I said hello, smiled his mother.

On Wednesday Bradley planned a trip to the zoo.  “I like to watch the elephants,” he said. His mother asked how he would get to the zoo.  “I’ll wait at the bus stop for the bus,” he said.  “Be home for lunch,” joked his mother.

On Thursday Bradley wanted to go camping in the mountains. “I’ll like to sleep in a tent with my sleeping bag,” he said.“ How will you get there?” asked his father.  “I’ll go in a car and

drive to the mountains,” said Bradley.  “Drive carefully, laughed his father.

On Friday he wished for a trip to the moon.  “How will you get to the moon?” questioned his mother.  “I’ll float high in the sky in a hot air balloon,” he said.  “Sounds like fun,” his

mother told him.

On Saturday he said, “Today I’m going next door to play with my friend.”  “How will you get there?” asked his father. I’m going on my roller skates,” said Bradley.  “Have a good

time, said his father.  “I will” shouted Bradley, “because I’m really going.”

General Activities

 

1. Cars with Matching Roads

Make roads with different colored string on the floor.  Give each child a car that matches one of the colors of the road and have them drive it along the matching road.  Let the children take turn with each color.

2. On the Road

Cut out a red stop sign and make a traffic light so the children can stop and go.

3.  Magic Tunnels

Prop up a paper towel tube on an angle on the floor and have the children use them by putting cars through.

4. Paper Airplanes

Make paper airplanes that the children can fly around.

5. Traveling

Set out suitcases, old clothes and a globe.  Ask the children where they might travel to and how they are going to travel by boat, train, car or plane.

6. Wheels on Parade

If the weather is nice out have the children decorate their ride-on-toys with streamers and have a parade.

7. Car Wash in the Water Table

Put cars, cloths and soapy water in a water table and have them wash their cars.  Can also be done with ride-on-toys depending on the weather.

8. Cars in the Sand

Provide cars, tunnels in the sand. Talk about the different tracks that the cars make.  You can also make some mud with the sand.

9. Train

Make a train using storage bins. Attach them together and add a steering wheel.

10. Transportation Match

Have one large card of transportation vehicles and then make a smaller copy of each one for the children to match each one.
