Songs

1. Dressing for Winter (Flannel Story)

This is how we dress on a cold Winter's day.

We put on our snowsuits to go out to play.

Then we put on our boots for walking in the snow.

Next, our hats and our mittens.

'Cause the wind begins to blow.

And now we're all ready to go out and play.

We'll stay nice and warm on this cold Winter day.

2.  Snowflakes

Sung to: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

Snowflakes, snowflakes,

Dance around,

Snowflakes, snowflakes,

Touch the ground,

Snowflakes, snowflakes,

In the air,

Snowflakes, snowflakes,

Everywhere.

3. 5 Little Snowmen

5 little snowmen standing in a row,

Each had a hat and a big red bow.

Out came the sun and it shone all day,

1 little snowman melted away.

4, 3, 2 and then 1

5.  Jack Frost

Where did you get that little red nose?

Jack Frost kissed it I suppose.

He kissed it once.

He kissed it twice.

Poor little nose it's as cold as ice!

Crafts

1. Snow Scene

Give each child a sheet of pale blue construction paper and rice. Let them create a winter scene.

2. Snowman

You need two paper plates, black construction paper, colored construction paper, buttons, yarn, googly eyes, pipe cleaners.

On one of the paper plates, cut off the outer rim, making a smaller plate.

Punch a hole near the rim on both plates.

Tie the two plates together, using the yarn (or ribbon).

On black construction paper, draw and then cut out a top hat and two boots. On colored construction paper (or gift wrap paper), draw and then cut out two mittens.

Glue the hat, boots and mittens on the snowman.

Either glue on googly eyes or draw eyes. Draw a mouth. For the nose, cut a short length from an orange pipe cleaner. Stick the pipe cleaner through the plate to secure it (if the plate is too tough, make a tiny hole with the tip of the scissors).

For the buttons, you can cut out shapes from construction paper, use round stickers, glue on real buttons, or simply draw them.

You now have a cute snowman decoration!

3. Snowflakes

Help the children cut out snowflakes using paper and have them decorate with sparkles.

4. Paper Mitten Craft

Give each child a mitten template and have them decorate it with various materials.

(markers, material, tissue paper)

5. Ice Cube Painting

Materials Needed: white paper; unsweetened Kool-Aid; white paper

Preparation: Fill ice trays with water. After ice begins to freeze, insert a popsicle stick into each ice cube. Let freeze until solid.

Directions: Sprinkle different colors of unsweetened Kool-Aid on a sheet of paper. Rub ice cube over top. See what kinds of designs appear.

Activities

1. Mitten Match

Separate pairs of mittens. Give each child a mitten and

put the matching mitten in a pile. The children take turns finding their

matching mitten.

2. Winter Clothing Mobile

Have cut out patterns of what you would wear in the winter (hats, coat, mitten, and scarf). Talk to the children about what you wear in the winter as you show them the patterns.  Attach each pattern to a hanger to make a winter clothing mobile.  Hang in your classroom.

3. What do we Wear?

Have children identify what you wear in the winter.  What body part does it keep warm? Practice dressing for outdoor play.

4.  Winter

Talk about what happens in the winter.  What we wear.  Talk about the weather in the winter.  What type of activities do you like to do in the winter?

5.  Snow Experiment

Bring in some snow from outside.  Let the children touch the snow.  Talk about how it feels.  What happens to the snow?

Stories

1.  Here comes the snow

Children are getting dressed to play in the snow but the snow hasn’t come yet.  They play outside for awhile then go back inside when they notice the snow starting to fall.  They get dressed again and play outside.  They built a snowman, go skating, sledding and throw snowballs.  Then they go inside for some hot cocoa.

2. Tiny the snow dog

Tiny the dog loves to play outside in the snow. He pulls a child on his sled, chases after snowballs and then decides to hide.  The child tries to find him. He looks everywhere.  Then the dog sneaks up behind him.  They go inside and have cocoa.

3.  The jacket I wear in the snow

This is a story about getting dressed up for winter.  It goes through each article of clothes that needs to be worn in the winter.

4.  Lucille’s Snowsuit

Lucille can’t wait to join her brother and sister in their winter fun.  But first Lucille has to get into her snowsuit.  Her boots get stuck and her zipper catches. The snowsuit is hot and makes her sweat.  She wants a parka and ski pants like her older siblings.  But when Lucille finally gets outside in the snow, she discovers that a snowsuit, no matter how much she hates hers, is the perfect thing to wear when you want to have the most fun of anyone on a snowy day.

5.  The missing mitten mystery

Annie and her dog, Oscar, have had a busy day playing in the snow.  And it only gets busier when Annie begins to look for her missing mitten-the fifth one she lost this winter.  Is it on the sledding hill? By the fort? Where could that mitten be?  She finally finds the mitten when her snowman begins to melt.  My mitten is the heart of the snowman.
